Virtual Consultation on Integrated Management Planning: Reflections on Current Process and Way Ahead

13 Jul, 2023

On 23 June 2023, a virtual consultation on “Integrated Management Planning: Reflections on Current Process and Way Ahead” was hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).

Organised under IKI-BMUV Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection project of MoEF&CC and implemented by GIZ, the consultation saw over 100 participants, including State Wetlands Authorities, Site Managers, Knowledge Partners, Third-Party Assessment Agencies empanelled for Integrated Management Planning (IMP)review, as well as Ministry representatives.

Dr Sujit Kumar Bajpayee, Joint Secretary, MoEF&CC, set the context of the consultation by presenting the status of IMP under the NPCA scheme, and the major inputs received from practitioners during the recent regional workshops on the IMP preparation process and key challenges.

Thereafter, participants shared their unique experiences with the IMP formulation process, addressing common data sources, necessary timeframes, and required capacities. Following a period of collaborative discussion, the session transitioned to an introduction of a proposed two-step IMP preparation process.

The session aimed to create a platform for initial dialogue on this newly suggested two-step IMP preparation structure. Participants were encouraged to share their thoughts, offering an initial assessment of the proposed framework's reception and further development. The session's constructive feedback shall serve as the foundation for the first follow-up event – a national workshop in Bhopal with State Wetland Authorities and Knowledge Partners, scheduled from 13-15 July 2023, focusing on initiating framework IMP preparation for prioritised wetlands.

About the project

The Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection project aims to strengthen the institutional framework and capacities for an ecosystem-based integrated management of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar sites) in India. Four Ramsar sites have been selected as pilot sites under the project: Pong Dam and Renuka Lake in Himachal Pradesh, Bhitarkanika Mangroves in Odisha, and the Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. The project is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in close cooperation with the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA). This project is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) supports this initiative on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Bundestag.
