State Release of Integrated Management Plans for Pong Dam Lake & Renuka Wetland on World Environment Day in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

05 Jun, 2023

Integrated Management Plans (IMP) for Pong Dam Lake and Renuka Wetland were released by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Mr Sukhvinder Singh, and other dignitaries during World Environment Day celebrations in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

The IMPs outline the commitment of the Government of Himachal Pradesh to the conservation and sustainable management of these wetlands and are a result of collaborative efforts under the IKI-BMUV supported Technical Cooperation project ‘Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection’.

IMPs consider the entire spectrum of ecosystem services and describe effective strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands through a cross-sectoral approach. The implementation involves multiple stakeholders, such as departments of forest, fisheries, tourism, rural development, as well as district administrations and Panchayati Raj Institutions.

These joint efforts promote the integrated management of Ramsar Sites in India and are carried out in close coordination with the National Plan for the Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA) of the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India. Ecosystem restoration, environment and biodiversity protection are also important objectives of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership between India and Germany, to which the project contributes.

About the project

The Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection project aims to strengthen the institutional framework and capacities for an ecosystem-based integrated management of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar sites) in India. Four Ramsar sites have been selected as pilot sites under the project: Pong Dam and Renuka Lake in Himachal Pradesh, Bhitarkanika Mangroves in Odisha, and the Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. The project is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in close cooperation with the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA). This project is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) supports this initiative on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Bundestag.
