Lessons & Takeaways from Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection project

Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection project is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of International Climate Innitiative (IKI), the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) is in its last month of implementation.

The closing workshop, held on 28 November 2025 in Delhi, brought together more than 80 participants whose work intersects with wetland conservation in India. Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Government of India), the German Embassy, state and Union Territory wetland authorities, site managers, knowledge partners, non-government and civil society organisations, private sector actors, and research and academic institutions. The gathering created space to reflect on the project’s journey, share experiences and discuss future directions for the sector.

The programme was complemented by panel discussions that focused on emerging priority areas for wetland conservation, integrated approaches to wetland management and monitoring, mobilising private sector engagement and investment for wetland conservation and wise use, and strengthening community engagement in wetland governance .

With the discussion and encouragement of the day, we are now looking to integrate the work of wetlands in our upcoming assignments, furthering the work for wetlands management in India.

About the project

The Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection project aims to strengthen the institutional framework and capacities for an ecosystem-based integrated management of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar sites) in India. The project is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in close cooperation with the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA). This project is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) supports this initiative on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Bundestag.
